Chesney an excellent resource

Regarding “Condon says city is thriving; Lichty points to recent police controversy (Oct. 18)”: I was surprised by Mayor David Condon’s recent accusations that former City Planning Director Scott Chesney was responsible for the “communication breakdown with the City Council” in discussions with local developers.

I hired Scott the day after his dismissal from the city, and he has proven to be an excellent resource for bringing groups together in a proactive manner where solid communication is key. I am confident that everyone at City Hall knew of the discussions with the Grand Hotel, Larry H. Miller and Target, but rapidly backpedaled the moment members of the public asked questions.

The problem was that Scott’s ability was misused in an environment of political maneuvering and Teflon clothing; where strategic planning is impossible to achieve and you get your check regardless of progress made. It doesn’t work that way in the private sector, which is exactly why city and county government, along with Greater Spokane Incorporated, should refrain from attempting to drive economic development, instead paying attention to supporting infrastructure, intelligent building codes (especially for in-fill) and public safety.

Instead of blaming others, it would do our officials well to walk through our skywalk system (outside of River Park Square) and hear the echoes.
