Want a free tree? City has some
The city of Spokane will have its second free tree giveaway next month, offering city residents to choose among a variety of trees that they can pick up at one of two locations and plant in their yards.
It’s part of the Residential Tree Program , which the city developed to cut down on stormwater runoff by planting more trees. Here’s how it works.
A city resident can register in advance for one free tree, and pick a species of his or her choice by filling out this online form. Registration closes Oct. 7, and the voucher will be mailed out.
The tree can be picked up at Home Fires Nursery, 2919 S. Geiger Blvd., between Oct. 17 and Oct. 24, or at the Spokane County Conservation District, 210 N. Havana St., on Oct. 24. You’ll need the voucher to pick up the tree.
The city has 1,000 trees. If they aren’t all requested through the online voucher requests, the remainder will be available to the public on a first-come basis.
The city wants to plant 10,000 trees by 2016 to help soak up stormwater. Recipients are asked to plant them in the best possible locations, preferably where the leaves and branches at maturity will overhang, streets, sidewalks, driveways or walkways.
