Trib: Why not Mount McClure?
President Barack Obama righted a wrong this week, restoring Alaska’s Mount Denali to its proper name. Denali is the Athabaskan title meaning “the high one.” Thus ended a chapter begun when gold prospector William Dickey named it Mount McKinley - in honor of the presidential candidate who shared his support for the gold standard. McKinley never visited Alaska, but after he was elected president and martyred in a 1901 assassination, the name stuck. Obama’s action already has Washington residents asking many of the same questions about Mount Rainier - the name bequeathed by Capt. George Vancouver during his 1792 exploration of Puget Sound. He did so in honor of a friend, British naval officer Peter Rainier - who it turns out was on the wrong side of the American Revolutionary War/ Marty Trillhaase , Lewiston Tribune. More here.
Question: Should Mount Heyburn be renamed for a U.S. senator who served Idaho better, James McClure?
