Water trees, conserve indoors
While I agree with John Roskelley’s Aug. 8 co-written guest opinion piece about conserving water and protecting our sole-source aquifer, I question the simple solution often proposed, reducing landscape irrigation. The combination of extreme heat and windy conditions this summer is severely stressing our urban forest, promising serious consequences for these drought-stricken trees.
In response, we regularly irrigate more than 20 trees in our yard, reducing the heat island, capturing carbon dioxide and mitigating potential combined-sewer-overflow into the river. Try to reduce your indoor water use, and remember to keep the area around your trees green this summer.
