Good vet support in Spokane

Regarding the Aug. 24 letter from Herb Postlewait (“Do more to honor vets”): On April 30, 2008, we lost our son-in-law in Iraq. Coming from Arkansas to bury our grandson’s father, we didn’t know what to expect. Driving the lonely journey from Fairchild Air Force Base, to our amazement, literally hundreds of greater Spokane citizens lined the street in Airway Heights – the very same people of which he spoke – holding their flags and standing in silent reverence.

“Some semblance of recognition.” Really, employer support of the Guard and Reserve, veterans job fair, Let Freedom Ring, Yellow Ribbon Events, Hero 2 Hired, Family Fest, Inland Northwest Hiring Heroes, Veterans Task Force, Red Cross, Operation Spokane Heroes, and I haven’t even begun to scratch the surface.

There are dozens of support groups and hundreds of volunteers in greater Spokane. So, if you want to comment on all of the blasted one-way streets in Spokane then I’m with you, but, on this subject, he does not know of what he speaks.

My father fought in World War II, and history may very well find them to be the “Greatest Generation,” but I can tell you for a fact that he would be proud to serve with any of today’s service men and women.
