Close divide in community
Thanks to Shawn Vestal and Kip Hill for their articles covering oversight of law enforcement in our area. Personalities, not principles, is one of the basics in 12-step programs and very apt in police oversight in our area. The people and organizations now recommending a close examination of the ombudsman selection process in the city and the petition to have similar independent oversight of the Sheriff’s Department are focused on principles. Our sheriff errs when he says it’s about politics.
It takes citizens, government and law to effectively govern and ensure democratic principles prevail. Law enforcement staffs are our relatives, friends, neighbors, citizens and perform specialized, sometimes dangerous work. Everyone in any of these groups is responsible for how effectively our city and county, state and nation govern.
Let’s find common ground where we commit to rise above our differences and distinctions. Spokane and the region can be leaders in our city, county, state and nation at a time when the divide between law enforcement and citizens seems vast.
Spokane, an all-American city, and I mean all, can and must for the good of all lead the way.
