Mukogawa celebrates 25 years

Spokane and sister city Nishinomiya, Japan, have a loving, caring, respectful relationship, including Mukogawa Fort Wright Institute, and all the young ladies who have made the campus their home away from home.

These are the numbers: 25 years have passed since Mukogawa Fort Wright Institute (MFWI) started its outstanding relationship with Japanese students; 11,757 students have participated; 5,000 Spokane volunteer families have as well.

And who knows the amount of time these AAA (adorable, awesome, amazing) young women have spent in our community? A lot.

A celebration was held recently with a cast of classy characters who have made this happen. Among others: Chancellor Ryo Okawara; Sheri Barnard, mayor in 1990-1994 when it all came together; Dr. Janet Gullickson; Sister Steinberger and Mike Mukumoto.

Thanks to Jim Camden for The Spokesman-Review front-page story and to Colin Mulvany for another great photo shoot.
