Bird dog club holds training day; non-members invited

Getting birdy early: Owners work with their dogs in an informal setting during the Spokane Bird Dog Association annual Training Day at the Espanola training grounds.

HUNTING — The Spokane Bird Dog Association is inviting hunters to bring their pointers and retrievers for a morning of training on Saturday, April 9.

The annual Training Day event includes expert help for all breeds, starting at 8 a.m., at the Espanola training grounds controlled and managed by the club west of Medical Lake.

Pointers and retrievers will be split into separate groups. Options for water retrieving are available at the site.

The public is invited to bring hunting dogs of any age or level of training. Participants should bring their own training gear, but the event gives them a chance to see what other dog training enthusiasts are using, said Doug Koenig, association president.

Bird dog owners can take away valuable training experience if they come with eyes and ears open rather than simply a goal to shoot a bird over their dog.

Cost: $5-$10 to cover cost of birds.

Info: Koenig, (509) 850-1839.
