Support parks system

I want to encourage Spokane’s outdoor community to get out and enjoy one of Washington state’s 14 national parks. April 16-24 is National Park Week, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, and if that is not enough to celebrate, this week admission is free.

It has been said that the parks are America’s best idea. Who can disagree when you see Mount Rainer or you are hiking through the rain forest at Olympic National Park or enjoying Lake Roosevelt?

As we take pleasure in these wonders, Congress needs to step up and better fund our unique system of national parks. Nationally there is a $11.9 billion maintenance repair backlog at our parks; in Washington State the backlog is $510 million.

The parks are America’s best idea and the place we go to recreate. Congress needs to recommit to the parks and provide guaranteed funding to fix this infrastructure repair backlog.
