Legislative primaries, by the numbers…
With the May 17 primary election approaching – and every seat in the Idaho Legislature up for election this year – AP reporter Kimberlee Kruesi tallied up how many candidates, from both parties, face no opponent, along with some other numbers on the upcoming legislative primaries:
5
GOP candidates competing in the most crowded legislative race, in District 11, after GOP Rep. Gayle Batt, of Wilder, announced she wouldn’t seek re-election.
49
Incumbent Republicans running unopposed in the primary.
23
Incumbent Republicans running unopposed in the primary and the general election — almost completely guaranteeing them a seat in the Idaho Legislature. A write-in challenger could defeat them, but that’s exceedingly rare.
17
Incumbent Democratic lawmakers running unopposed in the primary.
7
Incumbent Democratic candidates running unopposed in the primary and the general elections. Unless defeated by a write-in challenger, these candidates should continue serving in the Idaho Legislature for another two years.
0
Number of opponents Rep. Kelly Anthon, a Republican from Rupert, has faced since being appointed to his legislative seat in 2015. This means it’ll be nearly three years before he could ever face a challenger.
3
Candidates running as members of the Constitution Party.
8
Legislative districts with no Democratic candidates on the ballot.
