ENDANGERED SPECIES — Backpackers could have more company while hiking in California’s Sierra-Nevada Range if endangered wildlife groups have their way.

Bringing grizzlies back to California?
The nonprofit Center for Biological Diversity is seeking to have California and the feds study the reintroduction of grizzly bears in California’s Sierra Nevada, calling the effort “part of the re-wilding of California.” The last grizzly was killed in the state in 1924.

Meanwhile, efforts are underway to determine if grizzlies should be reintroduced in the North Cascades of Washington.
