Brake checking

Almost daily, I hear of some driver on the police scanner who is guilty of “brake checking” — touching the brakes to send a signal to a driver behind him or her. Now, brake checking is dangerous, if someone hits the brakes too hard. Or the driver of the following vehicle isn’t paying attention and rear-ends the brake checker. However, I admit that, on rare occasion, I have brake-checked a tail-gater. Never on the freeway, where drivers are going to fast to react. I didn’t “bomb” the brakes. Rather, I touched them enough to make the brake lights go on. Usually, though, I simply pull over and let the annoying tail-gater pass. What about you?

Question: Have you brake-checked another motorist in the last month?
