CFD: Strip mall fire source uncertain

Spokesman Craig Etherton of the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department provides this report re: strip mall fire that destroyed 3 Midtown Coeur d’Alene businesses:

“Today Coeur D’Alene Fire Department Investigators finished their preliminary fire Investigation and turned over the property to the owner’s insurance company representative.  We will join with fire investigators, engineers and insurance representatives from all the effected businesses and the building owner later this month.

“At this time the cause of the fire is undetermined, and we believe that it started in the rear storeroom of the Good Samaritan Thrift Shop.  While an accidental cause is most likely, engineers being brought in later this month will assist in confirming that hypothesis.

“We had heard some statements made at/near the fire scene speculating that the fire was arson, possibly due to an arson fire that occurred outside the Goodwill store at 4 th and Spokane on Sunday night.  At this time there is no indication that these two fires are related or that arson is the cause of the fire Wednesday night.”
