Learn from another scandal

I just finished rereading our mayor’s letter in Sunday’s paper. I’m appalled by his continued rationalizations, including his statement around his response to the alleged sexual harassment that the “statement could not be substantiated without the cooperation of the person making it. …”

While living in San Jose, California, in the 2000s, that city experienced a scandal around a high ranking city employee and sexual harassment (and has had additional problems since). Below is a sentence from their policy directive regarding harassment and discrimination that I suggest be added to Spokane’s policy:

“Supervisors/managers who know or should have known of discrimination or harassment and fail to report such conduct and fail to take immediate corrective action are also subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination from city service.”
