Voters created city mess

Nancy McLaughlin, a decent, effective and sensible leader, says she was beaten by negative campaigning. She was beaten by voters who chose opposite ends of the political spectrum again. Voters say they want effective but vote for no compromise.

Mayor David Condon is under attack by Council President Ben Stuckart and columnist Shawn Vestal for doing what the alleged victim of sexual harassment wanted done. Stuckart, the Capt. Renault of Spokane, didn’t run against the mayor last November because he couldn’t win. The city government was moving to improve service and fix long-neglected streets. Vestal is just a lefty trying to stir a tempest in a teapot. Police officials shocked by obscenities need to get out more.

Voters in Spokane re-elected a moderate Republican as mayor and then surrounded him with six Democrats on the council. Voters have created this mess. Anger and willful ignorance don’t aid good decisions.
