Cyclist seriously hurt in crash w/car

At around 4:10 p.m. Sunday, deputies from the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, Fire personnel from Timberlake Fire Department and Kootenai County EMS responded to the area of 22445 N. Abbott Road (adjacent to Chilco Mill) for a vehicle vs. bicycle accident.

When emergency personnel arrived on scene, it was learned that a Toyota Camry being driven by Sanford L. Johnson, 86, of Athol, was traveling south bound on Abbott Road.  Johnson did not see the bicyclist also traveling south bound on Abbott Road.  The driver struck the bike from behind and the rider, Richard B. Feldman, 65, from Hayden was thrown from the bike and landed on the hood and windshield.  As a result of the impact the bike rider sustained severe injuries to his right arm and lower body.

Due to the nature of the injuries and the type of accident, the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Team was called out to assist with the investigation.

Richard Feldman was transported to Kootenai Health where he is being treated for his serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation is still ongoing, however it does not appear that alcohol is a factor in the crash.  Also this crash was not related to the Ironman event.
