CAMPING – The Many Glacier Campground in Glacier National Park , an exception to the normal national campsite booking system, is opening for reservations this week.

Reservations for most federal campgrounds, cabins and lookouts can be made up to six months in advance recreation.gov , which means people already are getting the best sites around the country for mid summer.

Advance reservations for 41 of the 103 sites at Many Glacier Campground for the 2016 summer season will open Wednesday at 7 a.m. PST.

For the first time, reservations will be available for some campsites through the national on-line system at www.recreation.gov . Previously, all the campsites were only available by first-come, first-served availability.

The Many Glacier Campground, which has no RV hookups, is on the east side of the park, near the town of Babb, Montana. The advanced reservations will be for camping between June 15 and Sept. 4.

Campers are encouraged to create a profile account with Reservation.gov prior to making a reservation. Advance reservations are also available through Reservation.gov for the Fish Creek and St. Mary Campgrounds, and half of the sites at the Apgar Group Site. Camping at other park front-country campgrounds is first-come, first served availability.
