The Slice: Rodent meteorology

What does it mean if the marmot sees its shadow today?

Six more years of winter? A big engagement announcement at your Super Bowl party?

And just how are you supposed to know whether our furry friend has, in fact, made such a sighting?

Let’s move on.

If you had a one-sentence message for every 13-year-old in the Inland Northwest: “Stay in school,” wrote Candy Frankel.

“Be very kind to all your classmates because you don’t know how many of them will live to 18,” wrote Suzanne Harris.

Then there was this from Tina Wynecoop.

“Treasure who you are and just Be – and though it’s good to plan ahead, don’t forget to be the complete person you are right now, while gently and firmly reminding those who comment on your age that you don’t and won’t judge or expect awful things about them from the way their age erroneously defines and identifies them.”

Just wondering: We all know how restoring old cars is a local passion. But I’m trying to recall if I have come across a woman who is into that. Help me out here. Is it strictly a guys thing?

This date in Slice history (2010): Skepticism about grown-up comprehension: A friend had called her young son in on the carpet. She wanted to know why he had punched another kid.

“It’s complicated,” he said.

Lottery scratch cards as a birthday present: Yes or No?

Aging and Spokane history: If someone accurately described himself as “older than the B-52,” how old would he be?

How about “older than the B-36”?

Old business: A couple of weeks ago, The Slice asked readers if they owned guns.

I wasn’t really expecting people to report their answers to me. The question was more of a home-discussion prompter. Nevertheless, a few contacted me.

I have elected to keep those conversations to myself.

Warm-up question: If you were going to name a weather-forecasting marmot, what would you call the winter-predicting animal?

Today’s Slice question: Do those who have lived in multiple Inland Northwest neighborhoods over the years have a better perspective on life in the Spokane area than individuals who have pretty much lived in one place?

Write The Slice at P. O. Box 2160, Spokane, WA 99210; call (509) 459-5470; email pault@spokesman.com. While on a trip far from here, do you try not to buy durable goods that you could purchase in the Spokane area?
