Study teacher exodus

Recently, there has been much publicity about the statewide teacher shortage in Washington (and elsewhere). As a teacher of 22 years, and currently still teaching, I watch this story with interest.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of experienced teachers have left the field in the last few years. The last I read, our governor’s answer to this is to throw more money at the problem in the form of a 1 percent pay raise (minimum) and higher starting salary. Perhaps it might be a wise idea for the powers that be to instead ask why this unprecedented exodus from the profession is happening, instead of applying a monetary Band-Aid. Just something to consider.
