GU can find courage
What are the Jesuits afraid of? I’m a graduate of a Jesuit high school and university, and one of the most important benefits of such an education is the recognition that at a university freedom of thought and exposure to unusual ideas are the bedrock of a liberal education.
It would appear the leftward tilt in local Spokane politics has now descended on a respected Jesuit institution with the foreseeable consequence that political correctness is now the norm. According to Gonzaga University spokeswoman Mary Joan Hahn, our students can listen to this controversial author and speaker, but we don’t want to influence the local community with possible ideas of individualism, self-reliance and, dare I say it, an anti-progressive political philosophy.
A school that allowed “The Vagina Monologues” can certainly find some cultural courage to invite the public to listen to an author on the New York Times’ bestseller list.
