Academy of the Holy Names

The Sisters of the Holy Names have served Spokane since 1888. (Jesse Tinsley / The Spokesman-Review)

The Sisters of the Holy Names built an impressive edifice on N. Superior St. and it was part of the explosion of Catholic education in Spokane’s early years. There were several other Catholic schools, but Holy Names focused on girls education, eventually opening Holy Names College, offering a four-year degree. But Catholic education has been on the decline for the last half century and the high school closed in 1975 and the college in 1990.

The remaining sisters are elderly and plan to leave their convent, built in 1968, and move to assisted living facilities.

Read about the school and college in this week’s Then and Now.
