Wolfinger: Guv forms militia, not sheriff

In this Feb. 4, 2014, SR file photo, Kootenai County Sheriff Ben Wolfinger, right, speaks to the media surrounded by other chiefs of police and county sheriffs to urge the passage of Washington state legislation which would lead the authorities to decertify law officers who commit crimes.

In sharp contrast to a challenger for his job, Kootenai County Sheriff Ben Wolfinger responded to a Huckleberries Online question today by saying he has no business helping form an “organized militia” in the state of Idaho. In an interview with Don Bardway of Redoubt News over the weekend , challenger John Green said he supported 100% the formation of an “organized militia” in Idaho to combat federal over reach — and that sheriff’s should help foster such a militia. When told of Green’s statement, Wolfinger responded: “The law is quite clear.  The ‘organized militia’ is controlled by the Governor.  This is found in Title 46, Chapter 1 of the Idaho Code.  The Sheriff does not have any say in organizing the militia. The Sheriff’s job is to enforce the laws as the Legislature has given them.”

Question: Who do you think is correct re: a sheriff’s role in forming an “organized militia” in Idaho — Sheriff Wolfinger or challenger Green?
