It’s ‘North Idaho’

Anna Heisey, of Coeur d’Alene, a friend of mine, bought this book at an antique shop during a recent trip to the Oregon Coast. Notice the title: “History of North Idaho.” Not “northern Idaho.” Newcomers who don’t know better and Idaho Gov. Butch Otter refer to the five northernmost counties in Idaho as “northern Idaho.” But this history, printed in 1903, indicates that the region has been called “North Idaho” for more than 100 years. I have seen other references that pushes the North Idaho region name into the 1880s. (Phil Tumminello/Special photo for Huckleberries Online)
