Renfro to face death penalty

The Kootenai County Prosecutor’s Office will seek the death penalty for Jonathan Renfro, the man accused of killing a Coeur d’Alene police sergeant last year, if he is convicted of first-degree murder. Prosecutors filed a notice in 1st District Court on Thursday, the last day of the year, to try the slaying of Sgt. Greg Moore as a capital crime. Prosecuting Attorney Barry McHugh and Renfro’s public defender, John Adams, had agreed in November to extend the original deadline for filing the required notice to seek the death penalty. District Court Judge Lansing Hayes reset the deadline to Monday. Renfro, 27, has been held in the Kootenai County Jail since his arrest on May 5, 2015. He is accused of shooting Moore in the face early that morning after the officer stopped to question him on a dark residential street. He also is charged with grand theft, robbery, concealing evidence, removing a gun from a police officer and eluding police. Not-guilty pleas to all charges were entered on his behalf. Renfro’s trial is scheduled to begin Sept. 6/ Scott Maben , SR.
