City has shopping woes
I was very concerned about Macy’s downtown store closing, but felt that they were losing their customer base recently due to a number of factors.
You could never find an associate to help or check out. The store was cramped with too much thrown in. Their clothing selection seemed haphazard.
Downtown traffic and parking is a huge issue. Why would someone go downtown if you can go elsewhere and park for free? Macy’s did not even help by validating. River Park Square stores seem aimed at more affluent customers.
If I had my wish for stores to take its place, I would suggest IKEA, Crate and Barrel, Bass Pro Shops, Container Store, Dillard’s, Sam’s Club, Target or Eddie Bauer.
The city should look very seriously at its tax structure and incentives compared with thriving communities, or more stores will leave the newly designed Riverfront Park empty. Parking must be free to compete.
