Online retail kills jobs

I was sad to learn about the coming March closing of one of our downtown anchors, Macy’s. I fondly remember coming downtown as a child and seeing the gigantic Madonna on the front of then-Bon Marche at Christmas time. This vacancy will leave a huge hole in our beautiful downtown Spokane.

However, I have to ask myself; how many times have I shopped in that store in the last year? I think I ducked in there during Hoopfest for a reprieve from the 100-degree temps and to use the restroom.

Many say that they don’t shop downtown because of the parking, which is a valid issue, but I think the reason our retail businesses are suffering is that we choose to do our shopping online. We go window shopping for fun but decide we can order online to save a buck.

I don’t think we realize how saving those bucks here and there add up to the dissolving of someone’s job and ultimately, the entire store. Just to be able to shop in our jammies at home and save a bit? I’m afraid that habit is costing us dearly.

I will sure miss Macy’s, as I miss the Crescent.
