Fagan should apologize

Although I’m a liberal and almost always disagree with Spokane City Councilman Mike Fagan, I have felt that Fagan lends a valuable conservative perspective that tends to keep us liberals from going off the deep end.

However, at the Jan. 11 council meeting, Fagan expressed a degree of misdirection, fear-mongering, racism and mean-spiritedness that demands an apology to the people of Spokane. My comments pertain to the discussion about determining how the council would act on the petition changing policy regarding questioning folks about their country of origin.

Fagan dredged up fear and anger in trying to influence folks to fear immigrants. He cited rapes, murders and generations of criminals loose in the community, which would expand greatly if we didn’t follow the dictates of this initiative. His arguments and claims lacked logic and reason. He seemed to be pandering in the mode of Donald Trump to the uneducated and paranoid sector of his audience.

We all know that we have a liberal-loaded City Council, so we should appreciate that it contains a conservative perspective and voice. I hope that Fagan will get off his emotional rants and stick to articulating thoughtful conservatism.
