Ready for the weekend? Outdoor activities, programs coming up

Following are some of the upcoming area outdoors activities and programs enthusiasts might want to check out.

Saturday: Skijoring at 49 Degrees North

The groomed cross-country skiing trails at 49 Degrees North will be going to the dogs on Saturday.

Leashed dogs will be allowed at the Nordic Center and on the trails for skijoring all day long when accompanied by their human wearing a trail pass.

Gone to the Dogs and Skijor Day is part of the growing popularity of skijoring in which enthusiasts on skis are pulled by harnessed dogs.

Spokane Parks and Recreation has scheduled a skijoring clinic for Saturday at 49 Degrees North.

SUNDAY: Winterfest at Mount Spokane nordic area

Cross-country skiing 45-minute lessons for skating and classic will be offered at Mount Spokane during the Winterfest event on Sunday sponsored by Spokane Nordic.

Other activities include a Donut Dash race and skijoring clinic.

MONDAY: Paddling program

Kayak Camping: Six Beautiful Places Within a Day’s Drive, by Hulda Bridgeman, 7 p.m. Monday, sponsored by Spokane Canoe & Kayak Club, at Mountain Gear Corporate Headquarters, 6021 E. Mansfield in Spokane Valley.

MONDAY: Fly fishing for ladies

A casual event to acquaint women interested in fly fishing is set for 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 25, at Silver Bow Fly Shop ,

13210 E. Indiana Ave. in Spokane Valley.

Organized by Spokane Women on the Fly , the free event will include short presentations on fly fishing, where to fly fish around Spokane and tips on essential gear.

TUESDAY: Equestrian program

Gun Selection and Care for Backcountry Riders, by Robin Ball of Sharp Shooting Indoor Range, 7 p.m. Tuesday, sponsored by Back Country Horsemen, at Inland Northwest Wildlife Council Building, 6116 N. Market St. in Spokane.

FEB. 2: Fly Fishing Film Tour

An entertaining two-hour  show of fly fishing action featuring about 8 films.

Time: Doors: 6 p.m. / Show: 7 p.m.

Location: Bing Crosby Theater 901 W. Sprague, Spokane

Cost: $14 at the Silver Bow Fly Shop

FEB. 4: Mount Spokane snowshoeing routes

Snowshoeing routes at Mount Spokane State Park will be detailed in a program by a local expert in a program at 6 p.m. on Feb. 4 at Mountain Gear retail store, 2002 N. Division St.

Cris Currie, author of Mount Spokane State Park: A Users Guide, has been intimately involved with virtually every trail on the mountain as the president of the Friends of Mount Spokane State Park since 1998, and a founding member of the park advisory committee.

Currie, who lives near the mountain, has put his muscle flagging, building and maintaining the park’s trails.

He researched the park’s history and development for his 155-page book, and Currie is among the first park fans to be making tracks in any fresh snow on the mountain.

Space is limited for the presentation. Secure a spot by picking up a free ticket at Mountain Gear.

FEB. 6-7: Sled dog races at Priest Lake

The Priest Lake Sled Dog Races, which also include categories for skijoring with dogs, are set for Feb. 6-7. The annual event was founded in 1966 and organized by the Inland Empire Sled Dog Association.

Races will be held off Ravin Ranch Road and Highway 57 near Priest Lake, Idaho. Various categories range from novice and kids races to three-dog sprints and eight-dog 20 milers.

The events begin with a mandatory drivers meeting each morning at 8 a.m.

FEB. 7: Women’s Souper Bowl

An annual event that encourages women to take an enjoyable step into winter is set for Feb. 7.

The Women’s Souper Bowl XI – which includes cross-country skiing and snowshoeing activities, treats, prizes and lunch – is set for 9 a.m.-1 p.m. based out of Selkirk Lodge at Mount Spokane. The fundraiser supports the Women’s and Children’s Free Restaurant .

Activities end in time to avoid conflict the “other” Super Bowl.

Bus transportation to the mountain is offered.
