Two former lawmakers died over the weekend, Sen. Ipsen and Rep. Alltus

Two former Idaho lawmakers have passed away; former Sen. Grant Ipsen, R-Boise; and former Rep. Jeff Alltus, R-Hayden.

Alltus, 61, died Saturday at Hospice House after a five-month bout with pancreatic cancer. A memorial service is scheduled for June 16 at Candlelight Fellowship, Highway 95 and Dalton Avenue in Hayden.

Ipsen, 83, died at home in Meridian on Sunday. Funeral services are set for 10 a.m. on Saturday at the LDS Stake Center, 6575 S. Eagle Road in Meridian, with interment to follow at Cloverdale Cemetery. His family will also greet friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the church.

Alltus was an outspoken Christian conservative who was first elected to the Idaho House in 1994 and served three terms. He was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in January and told he had just weeks to live, but he instead lived five more months, during which he took his family on a vacation to Hawaii.

Ipsen served five terms in the Senate, first elected in 1992 as a Republican from Boise, and chaired the Senate Health & Welfare Committee. He lost his seat to Democrat Elliot Werk in 2002. A conservative, Ipsen remained active in recent years with anti-gambling causes, and testified at several legislative hearings.
