Primary process makes sense

A primary election is held for the express purpose of allowing the party the choice of who it wants to be their candidate, who will be their leader. This is why you must be a member of the party in order to vote. A trade union doesn’t allow non-members to vote for their leader. Neither does a social club.

Requiring someone to register as a party member in no way infringes on a person’s right to vote for president, since the primary election is not a presidential contest. It simply narrows the possible candidates a party will present at their convention (another often misunderstood procedure).
