Writing in the spaniel

So, let us meditate upon the nature of the current world as it relates to the U.S. One fulcrum for observation is the shortest passage of the Bible: “Jesus wept” (John 11:35). This very small passage has some slight variance in the major texts.

It was an utterance by some members of my Kentucky families, and for them it meant a sort of epiphany, in terms of world view. “How thus has it come to this!” (“Such an egregious notion and an abominable situation…”)

We are coming to an election year, with year likely two hugely unusual candidates. Jesus wept.

Among my family I have a female and a male spaniel. I would prefer to write in either one of them before either of the two who may appear on the ballot. My friends and guardians each are kind of heart and loyal of disposition. They, neither one, are prone to bad-mouth their fellows, although they are very conscious of coyotes, reprobates and brigands.

During a period when we anoint felons and demonize police, these Spaniels in their faithfulness aspire to wholesome values and preservation of good. Otherwise it is as Thornton Wilder said: “Ninety-nine percent of the people in the world are fools and the rest of us are in great danger of contagion. …”

If you are inclined to throw either of my two good candidates a vote, their names are Freckles and Hunter. They would make dandy president and vice-president, in either order. Jesus wept.
