Speaking of Amador …

When legislative candidate Paul Amador visited Hucks Central Tuesday, I thought I’d met a brother by a different mother. After all, “Amador” is a Portuguese name. And I’m 100% Azorean Portuguese. So I was amazed when Paul told me that he doesn’t have a drop of Portuguese blood in him. Seems Paul’s father was adopted into a blended family by a non-biological Portuguese man named Amador. Via grandfather Amador, Paul received his Portuguese surname and was raised in the Portuguese culture of central California, which is the home to a large Portuguese population. And, for those keeping score at home, Amador comes from the Portuguese/Spanish/Catalan word, “amare” or ‘to love’. Amador was a favorite name for a number of 16th century Catholic saints. It’s full meaning? Lover.
