Say no to coal

The federal government rejected a terminal that would have exported 54 metric tons of coal, admitting the future of coal is grim. The Millennium Bulk Terminals, North America’s largest proposed coal export terminal, would export 44 million tons of coal, emit as much greenhouse gas as 8 million cars on the road.

These terminals must be rejected. Spokane should have no attachment to this dying and dirty industry. Do we want 16 more coal trains coming through our community every single day? These trains increase chances of rail collisions and other problems, increase traffic on our roads and pollute our community with dangerous and disgusting coal dust.

As Tim O’Brien and Darrell Scott put it in their song “Keep Your Dirty Lights On,” “coal’s still black; it ain’t never turnin’ green.”

On Thursday, May 26, we must tell the Department of Ecology to say no to coal and the Millennium Bulk Terminals, for our community is not for sale.
