Deadly force questioned
The letter from Terri Echegoyen, “Deadly force necessary?,” echoed so many of my thoughts each time I read of another police shooting. I came from a law enforcement family and have always admired and respected those who place their lives at risk to protect society. But I also wonder why deadly force is used so often.
In recent articles, we have read of individuals brandishing knives who have been shot and some were killed. In one situation, a taser was used but failed and so again, deadly force. I know the police carry batons but it seems they are never used when the police are facing someone with a knife.
I asked one of my relatives about this and was told that a police officer trained in the use of a baton could disarm a perpetrator with a knife. I realize that is more risky for the officer but it appears that is not an option today and I wonder why. Shouldn’t deadly force be the absolute last choice?
It’s also obvious we need new leadership in the department. Let’s also hope that does not include ranking officers who stood and saluted Karl Thompson, a convicted felon.
