Recalling when Mother was ‘Queen for a Day’
Do you remember the old show, “Queen for a Day” (1945-64) with host Jack Bailey? Women would compete during the game show to become “Queen for a Day” and win prizes. Well, the mother of Christina Oss LaBang and Christina’s brother, whom we know as Stickman, won the honor. Christina was reminded of that when she found a clipping (see photo) while looking for her birth certificate. Christina’s mother had quite a story for “Queen for a Day.” Christian tells us about it in a Facebook post:
” How many of you remember ‘Queen for a day’ ? This (see photo above) is my mother winning and was crowned Queen on a television show in the late 1940s. Whoever received the most applause for their story was Queen and received many gifts, and a vacation trip. My mother (Juanina Marie Fernandez) won because she and two of her sisters and brother were incarcerated in a prisoner of war camp in the Philippines during WWII…it was while in the camp , she met my father (Norman Alfred Oss Jr). When they were rescued ‘ Raid at Dawn at Los Banos ‘ ( movie on History Channel), she married my father after being processed in United States at Catalina Island. The funny joke was that when she won this ‘ honor ‘ , her paid vacation prize was to visit Catalina Island. What a life.”
Factoid: Christina LaBang’s parents were released from the prisoner of war camp on her father’s 20th birthday, Feb. 23, 1945.
