Still a beacon of hope
Many of my Republican and Democratic friends are upset about Hillary Clinton’s loss and Donald Trump’s election as president. They’re fearful that bad things might happen to our beloved country as anti-Trump demonstrations break out in some American cities. While I couldn’t vote for either candidate this election, I’m optimistic that President Trump will put America’s welfare above his own and seek to unify all Americans.
When I was elected to Congress in 1994, replacing a distinguished 30-year incumbent, many were in disbelief, frustrated that a new person held office. Yet, some skeptics were eventually won over and the world wasn’t destroyed as some feared. The same is true now, so Americans must have faith that Donald Trump will govern on behalf of all, and encourage him to adopt policies that unite, recognizing that policy differences are part of American history and an essential element of self-government.
The United States remains a beacon of hope across the globe. The election of Donald Trump doesn’t change that.
