Spokane Valley council is sneaky

Our “sneaky” Spokane Valley City Council proposed at the Nov. 8 city council meeting (the very night of the presidential election) to increase our utility taxes by 6 percent, the largest percentage allowable while not requiring a vote from the taxpayers. Six percent might not sound like a lot, but when you consider the current tax only applied to phone (land) lines and the proposal would apply to water, power, sewer and natural gas, it would be a monumental increase.

I’m generally against tax increases unless there’s a good sound rationale for it, none of which has been explained by our esteemed city council. And this supposed 6 percent is really a lot more than 6 percent of our old tax because they’re taxing four utilities instead of one.

Remember, one of the original premises of the creation of our city was to keep taxes at a minimum. In the last nine months, our city council fired one of the best city managers at keeping our taxes low and increased the pay of the new city manager in excess of $30,000 to $175,000. They’re certainly not representing my best interests.
