Support needle exchange program
Political changes following an election have obvious impacts on policies and programs. As members of the Spokane medical community and the torch bearers of health care’s future, we want to express our support for continuing the Needle Exchange Program through these uncertain political times.
Common myths need to be dispelled:
1) Needle exchange programs do not increase or encourage drug use. Fact: The main purpose is to dramatically reduce the spread of HIV and Hepatitis. In a recent seven-year period, more than 700 needles were exchanged by infected individuals in Spokane County alone, each needle possibly preventing a new infection.
2) These programs do not increase taxpayer financial burden. Fact: The cost of treating infected individuals greatly outweighs the costs of the program; Spokane County pays for its exchange program with the prevention of only one HIV case every three years.
3) Needles are not freely distributed. Fact: A one to one exchange is required, which also allows for treatment, referral and counseling opportunities.
Let’s stand together as a community and encourage local efforts with positive impact for us and our neighbors. Supporting the Needle Exchange Program supports Spokane.
