Erase the dividing lines

We are disappointed that The Spokesman chose to feature only five articles for the “We wait in hope” column in the Today section. All five writers expressed fear, doubt, caution, uncertainty, disappointment and other negative emotions. While we may have felt some of those emotions ourselves, we know that there are others who may be optimistic if not elated at the results of the election. Those voices were not represented in your column. They should have been.

Nov. 8 showed democracy at work. The results of any election will never be satisfactory to all. But in our democracy once the election is over, the lines that divided us during the campaign must mend and meld in order for democracy to survive and thrive.

We miss sight of the fact, when so much is focused on the two candidates, that in a democracy we have three branches of government and the president is not the king or queen. We still have those three branches and we will survive, even as Americans change in demographics and how we look and feel and worship and communicate with one another.

Charles Krauthammer’s Nov. 12 column is worth reading about melding and the opportunities now before us.
