Montanan drops charging grizzly

In this November 2016 photo, Livingston hunting guide Justin Souza appears near the scene where he shot and killed a charging grizzly bear in the mountains near Emigrant, Montana's Glastonbury neighborhood as investigators gather evidence. Souza encountered the bear while he was elk hunting in the area the morning before and said he shot the grizzly in self-defense.

Justin Souza says he didn’t even know the big beast was there – that is, not until he saw a cloud of warm breath rising from a seemingly anonymous mound of earth. The story by Hunter D’Antuono of The Livingston Enterprise tells of an intense encounter between an elk hunter and a charging grizzly bear. The story becomes more vivid with a video the hunter recorded that briefly shows the bear charging and the phone dropping to the ground before recording the shots fired. The drama of the moment is captured in the hunter’s heavy breathing through the ordeal/ Rich Landers , SR Outdoors. More here.
