Beartooth Pass closes for winter; more to come

OUTDOOR TRAVEL – Beartooth Pass on the Montana-Wyoming border closed for the winter on Tuesday.

While all Washington Passes — including Chinook and Cayuse and the North Cascades Highway — are still open, the closure of the pass northeast of Yellowstone National Park is a reminder that outdoors enthusiasts must be ready for winter travel situations.

Glacier National Park’s Going to the Sun Road over Logan Pass also is closed for the season.

The Beartooth Pass closure affects U.S. Highway 212 between Red Lodge and Cooke City, Montana.

The highway typically reopens the Friday before Memorial Day.

The road has closed several times in the past month due to snow and ice.
