Do they hear Trump?

Arguments in support of Donald Trump usually mystify me, but David Bot’s letter (“Clinton bereft of morality,” Sept. 3) made my head hurt. Do Trump supporters actually listen to what he says? The letter attacks Clinton for America not supporting the Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. Wait a minute. Isn’t Donald Trump the one who admires Putin and says we may not support Eastern European nations if they are attacked?

Then there is the statement that Clinton is “Machiavellian for her personal pursuit of power and wealth.” Is this somehow in contrast to the man whose whole life has been about nothing else than the accumulation of wealth. Really.

Then there is “Hillary the crook.” I am somewhat puzzled about the “criminal” influence peddling for the Clinton Foundation. The foundation is a nonprofit charity that has recently been given good marks by charity watchdogs. What’s the crime? Every ex-president has made a fortune after leaving office, and the Clintons seem more idealistic than most.

As for the “liar” label. The New York Times’ conclusions from the FBI report seem pretty run of the mill politics to me. Don’t like it? Remember Jimmy Carter: honest do-gooder, great man, lousy president. That’s America.
