Video: Gutless field dressing method speeds packing out deer, elk meat

Randy Newberg demonstrates gutless big-game field dressing method for hunters. (Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation)

HUNTING — Field dressing a deer or elk is a no-brainer when you can easily get the entire carcass to a vehicle. Just zip, gut and drive home or to a meat processor.

But when all the meat has to be packed out from the mountains, especially when spoilage is a concern, consider the gutless field dressing method demonstrated in the video below by Rand Newberg.

Tip: Carry parachute cord in your pack to substitute for the assistant if you’re hunting alone. Tying a leg or  neck to a tree can be a major help, especially when the animal is on a steep Blue  Mountains hillside.

Following is a similar method demonstrated on an elk by  Corey Jacobsen of Elk101.com. Especially when hunting alone, I go the additional step of boning the meat from the four quarters.
