Awestruck yet again

After fearing local media had lavished their last drops of histrionic hyperbole upon the U.S. Air Force, its noble personnel and brilliant toys, I was relieved to find even more awe in store. Gen. Carlton D. Everhart II, who apparently won his name in an Air Force Academy essay contest, says his military branch “delivers an unrivaled power projection capability for America.”

How can anybody believe a subsequent word in his July 31 guest column? Perhaps his piece was intended for “Summer Stories.” I’m sure he would be astounded to know demonstrators outside SkyFest were concerned about Fairchild’s sharing toxic chemicals with adoring neighbors, but he wouldn’t know that from media reports. Surely he listed a few facts, but some of his statements are simply unbelievable or salvaged from preparations for wars already lost.

My concern is that this guy from another reality gets a bully pulpit while well-informed local dissenters, including veterans, are relegated to the roadside to warn of our next military cataclysm, whether it’s a whimper or bang.
