Massey crossed the line
The level of ignorance and cruelty in Steve Massey’s Aug. 12 column on sexuality was breath-taking. The title was terribly hurtful to anyone whose sexuality is outside the standard male or female definitions.
The human body and mind are incredibly complex. About 1.7 percent of humans are born with both male and female genitalia. There are those with XXY chromosomes, which is often expressed as a person with male genitalia and large, feminine breasts. If there is such a wide variety of actual physical expression of sexuality, why would anyone think it abnormal for there to be an even wider range in mental expressions?
His attitude is what drives these folks to suicide; his rationale was so devoid of logic, I could hardly believe what I was reading. Lack of acceptance and being deemed different to the point of “abnormal” is what makes suicide an attractive option.
A person’s sexuality is what they are born with. It is not a matter of choice.
I realize The Spokesman has a responsibility to print a range of viewpoints, but I think there is a line that shouldn’t be crossed regarding opinions that are deeply hurtful to an already vulnerable part of our population.
