The lure of Pavilion lights
Anyone who’s visited Las Vegas has most likely experienced the free outdoor water spectacle in front of the Bellagio. Complete with music, it draws people in - after which they often stay for eating and shopping (and, of course, a little gambling).
Instead of water, why not use lights to create an eye-popping display that incorporates the Riverfront Park Pavilion? Such a display would wonderfully complement the existing iconic structure. Light shows could be choreographed to music and automated, showing at scheduled times. The display could be periodically reprogrammed to create an ongoing sequence of “new” events, not to mention special events for holidays. The city could bring through artists to design new light shows while showcasing our technological savvy to the world.
With proper marketing, the display could easily become a destination attraction — an attraction people go out of their way to visit Spokane to see. Hydro One (formerly Avista) might be interested in serving as a sponsor as they become part of our community. And compared to many alternatives, a light display can be done at a reasonable cost.
