Debt is a lousy present

President Trump recently promised a “big beautiful Christmas present” in the form of a “huge tax cut.”

For all but the top 1 percent, the Christmas present will be more like a pair of socks from the thrift store. But, regardless of who gets what, the travesty is that this Christmas present is to be put on the national credit card in the form of an increase in the national debt of more than $1.5 trillion (more than $2.2 trillion if interest is considered and more than twice that if accounting tricks are discounted).

This is akin to putting extravagant Christmas gifts one cannot afford for only the favorite child in the family on a maxed-out credit card.

There should be no tax cuts for anyone, particularly corporations and the top 1 percent so long as the country has not balanced its budget.
