People’s lives were at stake when pavement on Interstate 90 through Coeur d’Alene broke apart earlier this winter, ITD says, so the department put together a $450,000 emergency repair project to patch the potholes that opened during a midwinter thaw. Like the stretch of I-84 in Canyon County that needed similar emergency repair work, the stretch of North Idaho freeway was scheduled for repaving within the coming two years, and the deterioration was caused by harsh weather. Mike Lenz of ITD told Prager, “The road was really falling apart.” He said hitting potholes at higher freeway speeds is dangerous, and “the safety of the public is our No. 1 concern.”
