Right time for bond

I’ve probably only voted for two tax increases in my lifetime, and I’ve certainly not always been satisfied with public education, but now is the right time to approve the Cheney school bond.

The high school portion of the bond has been reduced. The overall bond is higher as the district wisely included small expansions and safety upgrades to all five elementary schools.

Airway Heights should also get on board with this bond. A second high school should not be built until there are enough students to justify two buildings of around 1,000 students each. This is the model Mead followed when adding Mount Spokane High School. In the Central Valley School District, Liberty Lake is more than happy to bus their kids to a state-of-the-art high school in Spokane Valley. It will take future time and money to secure a building site in Airway Heights due to zoning issues.

Homeowners can support his bond, because when it comes time to sell our homes, we want to advertise the best school facilities possible in a community proud to call Eastern Washington University home.

No one enjoys tax increases, but for Cheney schools, it is the right time.
