Kisses for his missus
John Chamness, of Honolulu, Hawaii, divisional commander of the Salvation Army, and his wife, Lani, reprise the iconic World War II scene on V-J Day of a sailor and a nurse locked in a passionate kiss. The photo was taken a few months ago in front of the Battleship Missouri in Hawaii. John and Lani, of course, helped lead an initial bid to bring the wildly popular Kroc Center to Coeur d’Alene and spearheaded the planning and construction. They supervised the Kroc Center and the associated Salvation Army Church from 2006 to 2012 before being promoted to divisional commander for Hawaii and the Pacific Island Division. Huckleberries asked John how he was doing in Hawaii. Here’s his email response:
Things are going just fine for us in Hawaii as we near our 5th year here. We oversee the Army in Hawaii and Micronesia which extends all of the way to Guam and Saipan. This means that we spend a lot of time on the road. The skills I developed in CDA are proving to be very helpful here in Hawaii as we look at three key properties we have on O’ahu and how these should be redeveloped for future ministry and social work. We have two kids in college in Hawaii and our youngest will graduate this June from high school. We think of all our friends back in CdA often and continue to keep abreast of the activities through Huckleberries online.”
